Clash of the Titans

Maybe someday I will be the foreigner that turns out to be the lifesaver for entertainment. Nothing beats watching a film in the theater, even if the movie turns out to be  bust.

Daria’s Chinese is amazing. She has made arrangements with the theater to begin showing films in English on a more regular basis. A bit of a splurge yes, but oh so worth it. If we can guarantee at least 10 tickets they are willing to show the film in English with Chinese subtitles.

This week’s film was Clash of the Titans. Needless to say I was stoked, come on Greek Mythology nothing gets more twisted and entertaining then that pantheon! About 10 min into the film I realized the writer had somehow miss placed his copy of Bulfinch’s Mythology! Okay  maybe he forgot he was using that one as a doorstop but what about his quick reference guide, Edith Hamilton’s Mythology? Its not like he is writing about the obscure adventures of Gilgamesh and Utnapishtim! It’s GREEK MYTHOLOGY for crying out loud.

The orgins of Perseus was completely off, the reason for slaying Medusea was botched and don’t get me started on the Jinn! They aren’t even Greek.

So the film was not an academy award winner, but English entertainment on the big screen is  nonetheless English entertainment on the big screen. At least the inaccuracies gave me a reason to return home and again brush up on my Greek mythology. So after all my complaining I had an enjoyable night and I’ve finally learned the secret to 3D films, back row seating.

Girls Night!!

Everything set!

Victoria is becoming a regular here at the K&K Bed & Breakfast. We decided to make a night of it this last trip and invited Katie over for a girls night. We pulled out all the stops, nutella covered strawberries, American Movie Butter popcorn and soda.

We popped in two chickflixs and settled in for an evening of enjoyment.

We started with The Wedding Date then ended with Jab We Met, only the best Bollywood film ever. Okay maybe not the best but it makes my top three.

I love my apartment it makes a great guest house. Kelly’s bed is huge so we are able to bunk together and give Victoria my bed no inconveniences. Katie volunteered for the couch I swear. No mother I would never ask a guest to sleep on the couch.

The night was a success and I definietly seeing a repeat in the near future.

next morning after math...

阿凡达 ~ Avatar

I knew there was a movie theater in town but was promptly told upon arrival last term, there were NEVER English showings. All movies that made it to Weifang were dubbed. I’d accepted this as fact until Katie said she saw the movie billboard say something about English(英语). As it was next to something that read 3D they discovered it was the movie Avatar. Ammon had tried to get me to go with him while home and I kept putting it off then left without seeing it.

Katie and Thomas fearlessly went to the box office to asses the situation. Through the help of a student via cellphone they discovered the movie was as predicted dubbed in Chinese but the theater did have a copy of the film in English with Chinese subtitles. The great thing about being a westerner in China is the fact that businesses are always trying to please you! They offered to show the movie in English with Chinese subtitles for the final showing at 10pm as it was hardly booked. Of course we jumped on it.

Word is now spreading in Weifang that there is a possibility to see a film at the theater! A high point in everyone’s week. We’re going to push for Alice in Wonderland 3D, I’m trying to get a group for Sherlock Holmes. Movie tickets are American prices, ¥60 for a 3D film and ¥40 for a regular but well worth the treat.

Don't we look cool!

Don't we look cool!

The Galaxy could take a lesson on 3D glasses from China, they were the first pair I’ve gotten work over my glasses without slipping. I still prefer regular films over 3D as they just seem blurry to me.

Ammon, I have to admit I was blown away. I went into the movie without any expectations and completely ignorant. I thought the movie was a cartoon to be completely honest. I loved it. I wish I could see it again and am kicking myself for not going with you.

My Chinese DVD player

or should I say Macgyver DVD player

Katie and Thomas came over for lunch and Thomas began tinkering with my DVD player as he promised. It had broken a few months ago and since I so generously got a screwdriver for  Christmas he promised to take a look at it for me.

Here’s what I had to begin with:

1 DVD player with a power problem

1 DVD player that just didn’t work

1 DVD player with a driver problem

and 2  kind friends who had an abundance of patience and apparently a free afternoon.

So as I slaved away giving finals in my office listening to stuttering English Katie and Thomas slaved away in the living room operating like two experienced surgeons. Between finals I snuck a look and wide eyed I tried to take in the scene before me. Three disassembled DVD players with neat piles of screws, cables and fuses.

The Beginning

The Beginning

In the end a miracle was accomplished and a rather unorthodox player was born. So now lets go through the steps.

1. Remove top cover

2. Remove magnetic disc centering holding bar

3.Insert desire disc for viewing pleasure

At least it works.

At least it works.

4.Replace magnetic disc centering holding bar, making sure sides are flush with base, and the magnet is unobstructedly engaged with sub magnet.

5. Press the close button to engage the driver making sure Step 4 was completed properly without an unidentifiable rattling noise accompanying the spinning.  (the loading dock is not functioning but this step is necessary to trick the player into loading the inserted DVD)

6. Replace cover. (to prevent a second layer of dust settling on the inside although it might seem pointless after the layer of dust that accumulated while completing steps 1-5)

7. Pray the TV is on the right channel or take another 10min figureing out which key to hit on the Chinese remote!

DvD player 0048. Enjoy your film, while keeping your fingers crossed, that none of the parts shift as they are no longer mounted in place.

Ohh the Little Things in Life…

Popcorn and Youku, who said entertainment had to cost a fortune?
My first batch of non-microwave popcorn!

My first batch of non-microwave popcorn!

Yes, I’m learning to relish the little accomplishments in my life. I blame it on the frustration Chinese is giving me.  This is my first batch of popcorn ever to be made with out a microwave or a Whirly-Pop, and I didn’t even burn it. Fortunate for my waist the butter here is terrible and so I will just have to go with unbuttered, salted popcorn.

My ohh so busy life...

My ohh so busy life...

One of the definite perks of Chinese Internet is that you can find any media easily and for free. Although it blocks some sites there are no copyright laws so movies and TV shows abound! Youku unlike YouTube doesn’t piece episodes or movies. Don’t get me started on the wonders of Baidu, just about any movie you could imagine. (the Chinese equivalent of Google)

So as pathatic as the following is, its a comfortable life I’ve settled into.

NCIS: Seasons 1-7

Numbers: Seasons 1-6

Army Wives: Seasons 1-3

The Big Bang Theory: Seasons 1-3

I’ve learned I just have to wait 36 hours and the new episode is uploaded!

Bones: Season 5

Castle: Season 2

Glee: Season 1

Nightly Lock-In

If you have yet to create a picture of the strict school I work at here should be the topper. Let me just clarify up front they are NOT strict with the teachers. It is so laid back I almost have to laugh, well laid back all except for the no vacation part.

The students on the other hand do not get the same pleasure. They are confined to campus Monday – Friday and not just to campus during their free time. To prevent any possible breakouts, each evening from 7:00 – 9:20pm they are confined to their classroom. They can do what ever they like within the classroom they just have to remain there.

Then once they are released they have 20min to get back to their dorms for lock-up. And I thought a 12:00am apartment curfew was a pain, 9:40, really!?!

Any way to ease some pain I’ve brought my DVD player a few times and let them watch some films. Unfortunately the class across the hall who I also teach found out about movie nights so they want in to now. Not really quite sure off far my one DVD player can stretch. So I’ve come up with a new trick, a class will have to earn movie nights. Oh the power of being a teacher or I should say a foreign teacher with a much coveted DVD PLAYER!!! hahaha.  I think I will see an increase in lets see, homework, class participation oh and what else did I mention to them, ah that’s right practice! I have made the rule that if they are going to watch a movie it must be in English with English subtitles. No CHINESE is a rule I stick to in the classroom, during or after class time.

Bond...James Bond. Casino Royale movie night.

Bond...James Bond. Casino Royale movie night.

My favorite class on the other hand already do all of the above and thus don’t really need the motivation just the treat! The first evening I put the movie up for a vote,  the girls out numbering the boys 1:6, the chick-flick won by a landslide. I did learn some movies just aren’t that funny when you are trying to just understand the dialogue and not focusing on the subtle jokes, New in Town for example.  I decided to give the boys a chance second round and suggested a Bond film, at least there is something in it for the girls right? (Come to find out Daniel Craig just doesn’t cut it for Asian chicks)

Let me let you in on a little hint as to why this is my favorite class. After showing a film I always have two or three students come up to me with a word they copied down asking for a definition. See, movie nights can be educational, even if it is only the slang they pick up such as ain’t and gonna.

It has become a relaxing way to spend the evening, I take journals to grade and just sit in the back. I’ve been given an open invitation to spend my evenings with them with or without the DVD player.

Girls night in…movie night it is!

While out with the gang and some of Dantzelle’s students I purchased some great classics. I suggested to Dantzelle and Katie we should get together and have a girls night. Dantzelle’s students overheard me and the following day promptly asked when we would be getting together to view the films.

I decided to make a night of it and invited over some of my students, I have finally began to entertain my own students and not just Dantzelle’s. Anyway I crammed 10 girls in my apartment for a viewing of Penelope. I insisted that American culture dictated food and drinks were to be consumed during the film and was finally able to polish off a good portion of the fruit. Unfortunately some students were aware that popcorn was the norm but fruit salad was all I had to offer.

I also offered to take my DVD player to the classroom in the evenings so more students can watch a film. Last night my favorite class and I watched New In Town. Not really funny if your not a fluent American English speaker. I don’t think they got much through the Minnesota accent. Hopefully the next film will be better.
