First Day Jitters

Well vacation is over, I begin teaching tomorrow morning bright and early. I have an eight o’clock class! I still don’t have my full schedule yet so that will be posted later.

So far I have two classes. Both Freshman classes, one Tuesday at 8:00-9:40 and the second Thursday 10:15-11:50am. I like morning classes so everyone keep your fingers crossed my schedule keeps looking like this. I still have 10 hours to add to this schedule so who knows.

I think I’m ready. I have my lesson planned and handouts copied. I have reviewed the plan with Wendy and she has given me the green light. Who ever reads this please say a pray for me! Confidence is the key! If I go in prepared and put on a confident front the students will respond. Or at least that is the theory here.

I know I can, I know I can, see everything you need in life you learned in Kindergarten. I think I should buy myself a copy of The Little Engine That Could and pull it out on nights like these when I could really use the boost.

Even with all those extra classes which I am truly grateful for, I still feel completely unprepared. Let me tell you following in my parents footsteps is a very very scary path at times. I look at their class rooms and their ability and can only pray to give a tenth of what they do by nature. I am so grateful for their example and commitment. All I can do is strive and do a whole lot of praying along the way. Thank you Mom and Dad for being such an amazing example.

Well I’m off to bed there is nothing more I can do tonight. The first day is the hardest on the nerves right?

Year of the Tiger, 22nd Birthday

22 in China!

22 in China!

Earlier this week James had asked about my birthday on Friday. I was a little thrown off not  having spoken to anyone about it. Then I realized he had my passport for paperwork. I didn’t think much else about it and Friday dawned with little expectation.

I was thrilled to get to Skype my two favorite people in the world!
Luke and Charlie!
With everything else they were still  the the icing on the cake. Charlie kissed the screen and Luke and I figure out web cam hugs. I am so glad I don’t have to say goodbye to seeing them regularly!

The day was a full one  filled with blogs, doctor visits (everyone’s favorite right?) shopping and Skyping with friends and family.

Talking to Luke and Charlie was a pleasure before the Doctor’s. Not China’s best birthday gift to me but hey now it is over and down with, right? I went out for noodles with the group and then shopping. I treated my self to a much needed dust mop. Wow, I am getting old when my Birthday presents to myself start getting boring and practical, I mean come on cleaning products!

The faculty dinner in the evening was a much anticipated event, although the seating arrangements did create some apprehension on my part. Also the place setting struck fear into my heart when I realized I didn’t bring a fork!

At the end of the meal the Dean surprised me with a huge cake and an international round of Happy Birthday! I was told I was the year of the Tiger as the beautiful cake reflected.

The cake was huge, beautifully decorated! There was a tiger in the center with yellow roses in back.

So I had no idea where to even begin to cut a cake that size. I went for small slices at first but couldn’t manage to get them off the platter. The Dean took over much to my relief. The pieces seemed to get larger and larger as he began cutting. Adam’s was the size of a book, no joke.  But hey by the end it was almost completely gone.
Birthday Cake with Chopsticks!

Birthday Cake with Chopsticks!

I don’t know how much more Chinese you can get then Birthday Cake with Chopsticks! I did it. I ate the whole piece. The cake was wonderful it was light and moist, almost like an Angels Food Cake. The Icing was excellent also not too sweet.  Dad you would have loved it. It had a creamy fruit filling. I’m not just saying this to be nice or polite but it was one of the best Birthday Cakes I’ve had. Delicious!

After the dinner I was presented with a gift from the Dinning Hall staff. I know Mom, talk about spoiled! So I when I opened the gift at home it was another miniature cake and when I say miniature I mean your average size 10″ cake.

I was able to Skype with the family in the evening before turning in for the night. So my 22nd Birthday was amazing! I have no complaints whatsoever, wait there were two particular people who I missed speaking too. You know who you are.

China still continues to be friendly and inviting! So a large thank you to the faculty and staff of the College!

Dinner with the Dean

I sat on the right side of the Dean, a little intimidateing is an understatment.
I sat on the right side of the Dean, a little intimidateing is an understatement.

Tonight was the big dinner, the official welcome and start of the new semester for all the foreign teachers. I’m so grateful I had Adam and Dantzelle there to walk me through the evening’s many toasts and dishes.
We all arrived at the Teacher’s Dinning Hall and then were directed to a back room. It was a beautiful Dinning room with a large circular table in the center. We were assigned seats, I was terrified to discovered I was being placed next to the Dean I figured Adam would have been seeing as he speaks Chinese. I found out once seated the right side is an honor which only made it all that much nerve racking when the Dean entered. James introduced me and I gave a weak smile and an even weaker Ni Hao.

Throughout the meal when the Dean would address me I tried hard to focus on him and avoid the temptation to look terrified at James for a translation. James always came through, as soon as the comment was given, with a quick translation and then returned my reply. The Dean was a very pleasant man who really made the whole situation as relaxing as possible. He even kept his chuckles to a minimum and all in good humor at my feudal attempts with the chopsticks! He would even demonstrate easier methods of grabbing at certain foods. I was obviously not the first western who had muddled up the basic eating utensil.

I had no idea they made Lazy-Suzzannes that big.

I had no idea they made Lazy-Suzanne's that big.

Can I just start by saying I witnessed the largest Lazy-Suzanne in the world! The food was served one dish at a time and was circled around for everyone to grab at their desire. The first dish was shrimp and was sent directly to the Dean who offered me the first piece, here was the first butchered attempt to grab with the chopsticks. I think everyone got a clear picture of were the night was headed for me. An amused chuckle filled the room at this first attempt on my part. Of course I was the only new-bee at the table, the other foreign teachers being from Japan and Korea and Adam and Dantzelle having had plenty of practice. Dantzelle was at my side the entire time offering encouragement and getting my food when the 7th try still was coming up fruitless.

So onto the parade of food…

Just chicken with bell peppers, but really random pieces

Duck Head - Yes I did try but can't say I ate much for the simple fact I couldn't find much beyond bone, and cartildge, what little meat there was it was good

Some of the less exotic foods included Edamame, my favorite (the Dean asked if this was my first time trying them as I seemed to go for those anytime it circled round, I admitted no as it was a favorite back home), shrimp and vegetables, mushrooms and pork, beef slices and leeks. Dantzelle warned me the fish was salty but that could not stop the shock when I tried it. I thought I had licked a salt cube and then some! Not a repeat that was for sure! The fried bread disks next to the fish was great though.

Towards the end of the meal the toasts began. This is where Adam and Dantzelle really came in handy. You are given a class of water, tea (which we kindly declined) and a toasting glass (we got juice rather than beer). You only touch the toasting glass at the toasts and have the option of downing it or sipping it each toast .  Once the toast has been given you tap the Lazy-Suzanne and then drink. They asked each teacher to give a toast expressing their first impressions of the campus. I was the first to go. I said I found the campus very beautiful and everyone extremely nice. The Dean said that was a high evaluation indeed and was pleased. I was grateful I was not the only one to give my toast in my mother tongue as most of the other teachers did as well.

Once the toasts were all over the Dean announced that the dinner was too fold, one to welcome the new teachers, the second to celebrate my Birthday. So the hot seat got hotter. They presented me with the biggest birthday cake I’ve ever had or seen in real life for that matter.

So my first, hopefully not last, birthday in China was wonderful! Even if I did have to eat my cake with chopsticks!

So here it is! Kelly you can’t beat these terms!

Chinese Food, well uhmmm

Teacher’s Dinning Hall

I have two options for dinning, cook my own ( yeah right ) or the school’s Catina. The only real draw back to this second option is the fact that the food is, well, Chinese.  I was never a huge fan back in the States and assured my self the Americanization of most food slaughters the true taste. I am beginning to doubt this assumption. Although the food is very different from Panda Express’s Orange Chicken or Sweet and Sour Egg Fu Yung, I am not finding the food here much more appealing.

This is my first time eating at a Caffeteria at school and having set meal times is going to take some getting use to.

  • Breakfast: 6:30 – 8:00am
  • Lunch: 11:30 – 1:00pm
  • Dinner: 5:00-7:00pm

For Breakfast and Dinner I must go to the Student’s Dinning Hall.

For Lunch the Teacher’s Dinning Hall is open.

Back - Thats my number, still means nothing to me

It costs 8¥ but the school pays 5¥ as a teacher perk. So I get a heaping plate of Chinese for 3¥ or 50¢. Talk about a steal.

Wendy helped me find my way around the Teacher’s Dinning Hall. So here is the breakdown.

  • Main course: one of two selections (today’s: Chicken and Bell Peppers or Fish)
  • Carbs/Sweets: three of nine selections
  • Rice!
  • Sides (no limit, various stir frys and noodle dishes)
  • Soup/Broth/Rice Water/Drink  (I’m still forming an opinion)

Look Mom, Chopsticks! Now bets anyone as to if I will make it to my mouth?

What do you have for lunch? Wanna trade?

What do you have for lunch? Wanna trade?

Nathan you will be happy to hear my favorites are the veggie sides and the Tofu pancakes!

Let me just take a second to explain the chicken. Originally I was excited hey chicken how bad can you screw that up? Well lets see, leave the bones in, the skin on, and cartilage attached oh and no silverware to separate this just CHOPSTICKS!! My meat in take is definitely dwindling quickly.

The three breads you see in the foreground are starting from the bottom up, tofu pancake – pastry filled with tofu and leeks (favorite so far but that is not saying much), corn meal bread stick, and a steamed bun with brown sugar in the middle (not as tasty as it sounds).

The side dishes are great! Longbeans and bacon, cucumbers and tomatoes in a spicy garlic sauce and the ever present rice.

On to the soup/broth/rice water/drink. I really just don’t know what to call it. It is considered the soup/drink for the meal and it is quite literally rice water. They cook the rice in 10x more water than normal and then serve the water, so it is just a starchy warm broth. There is white rice water or brown rice water, which do you think I go for?

Chopsticks, oh I could write a whole post on these two little twigs! I have yet to conquer the chopstick thing. To be honest I do use them at the apartment instead of a fork. I figure I might as well make a fool of myself in the privacy of my own apartment if I’m going to do so in public anyway. Hey and in the Dinning Hall at least my attempts provide the floor show. Again Wendy offers tons of encouragement.

As to the amount of food I have only eaten lunch at the cafateria and usually skip dinner on those days.  I did find out I can take my lunch to go which I might start doing so I can eat half for lunch and half for dinner.

Well everyone pray my taste buds have a drastic change of heart or the weight I intended to lose will start coming off faster.

Tour of the Campus!

From the Back of the Front Gate to my Door. I didn’t have the guts to go out into the street to get the front picture. I still find crossing the street an unnecessary death wish.

There is a guard at the gate at all times. Students are only allowed off campus Saturdays and Sundays.

These apartments replaced a ‘village’ Wendy told me. They are 6 stories I think, I hope they have elevators but my honest guess is no. There are about ten bulidings.

The devoloper was allowed to build if those living were able to get afforadable housing with the project. The rest of the area will be turned into commercial property.

So this will be home for another year!

I will last the year.

Yesterday evening after a triumphant return from my first excursion out of my apartment, all my by self, I discovered I had no Internet. I was completely devastated that I was not going to be able to bask in the glory of my accomplishment, not only had I managed to make a purchase but more astounding I was able to open my front doorby myself  in under five min, which is no small feat!

I had gone to the small store on campus to purchase hooks to hang the decorative scrolls. I ran into a little confusion when I decided to purchased some bananas. I selected a few and was walking them to the register to pay when a gentleman tapped me on the shoulder and proceeded to explain something to me. He could tell he was getting nothing across and elicited the help of a fellow worker. Again the explanation was lost. Finally I surrendered the bananas as that was the obvious source of contention. He beckoned for me to follow as he proceeded to the center of the store to a weighing station. I had assumed they would weigh and price at the register but no harm done, once priced the bananas where returned to me and the kind gentleman escorted me to the shortest line with a smile. So lesson learned produce – weigh station -  then the register!

Psychologically the trip helped conqure the fear of survival! It is truely amazing what you can get across with gestures and looks. So eventually I hope to learn Mandarin but until then the confused Westerner look will have to do. But hey as long as I can buy bananas and bread I will survive!

I was hoping the Internet problem would resolve itself but to no avail, I awoke to no Internet. I felt rather cut off and as Sunday tradition dictates in the Reagan household I was allowed to check in without pushing the boundaries of being homesick.  After two tech Officers the problem was resolved! Thank you James! So Mom or Dad would you please call again!
